Stonehenge
Close to the city of Salisbury and approximately 50 minutes from Swindon is Stonehenge - probably one of the most recognisable ancient wonders in the world. Stonehenge continues to amaze and inspire many thousands of visitors from around the globe. The stones were erected more than 4,000 years ago. How they got there and what they were used for remains a mystery.
Avebury
Approximately 10 miles south of Swindon is the scenic village of Avebury, encompassed by a mysterious, 4,500-year-old stone circle. The purpose of the circle is still widely debated today. Surrounded by the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, manor house, and museum, Avebury is also home to a monument on Silbury Hill.
Marlborough High Street
Located 12 miles south of Swindon, Marlborough is a picturesque English market town. Famous for its college, Marlborough is a popular tourist location. The town is home to plenty of accommodation, excellent shopping opportunities, and a large selection of restaurants.
CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP
Cheltenham is a large spa town located on the edge of the Cotswolds. It’s famous for its national hunt steeplechase racecourse, which hosts the gold cup. The town is also home to several cultural festivals that feature nationally and internationally famous contributors. The shopping centre boasts several department stores, as well as the Regent Arcade. It is well-known locally for its wine bars and restaurants.
SALISBURY CATHEDRAL
The city of Salisbury is based in the south of Wiltshire, about 40 miles from Swindon. It retains much of its past, with timbered buildings, an early English Gothic cathedral, a thriving market, a lively art scene, and some of England’s finest historic houses. There are plenty of places to shop and eat. Plus, Stonehenge is nearby.
Bath Roman Spa
Situated between Swindon and Bristol, the university city of Bath offers a truly unique experience replete with stunning architecture, a fabulous selection of independent shops and big-name venues, and natural hot bath spas. There are many attractions to visit here, with stunning views from the surrounding countryside.
Lechlade
10 miles north of Swindon is Lechlade, a popular tourist attraction. In summer, the river Thames comes alive with narrow boats and cruisers. With excellent local fishing spots, many places to eat, and plenty of antique shops to browse, Lechlade is a must-see location. Nearby, you’ll find Cotswold Wildlife Park, the Trout Farm, and the town of Burford. In addition, the manor home of William Morris, Kelmscott, is nearby.
Cirencester
Situated 15 miles from Swindon, Cirencester is the capital of the Cotswolds. During Roman times, it was the second-largest town in England, but today, Cirencester is a market town dominated by the cathedral-like parish church of St. John the Baptist. The town contains many interesting buildings that span several centuries of history.
UFFINGTON WHITE HORSE
Dating back to the Bronze Age, the Uffington white horse is by far the oldest of England’s white horses. Its original purpose is unknown, and its design is very distinct from others. It’s also the longest of the white horses at 365 feet.
